Hurricane preparedness
It’s hurricane season and we have a potential storm on the way that will have some impact on Nova Scotia. We want to make sure that you have the information you need to be prepared, that’s why we have created these handy checklists to help you get ready.
Take advantage of the beautiful day today to ready your home and property.
Outdoors:
Remove or secure anything that high winds could pick up including:
o Garbage cans
o Planters and gardening equipment
o Patio furniture – tables, chairs and stools
o BBQ and cover
o Childrens’ toys and sporting equipment
Cut away any branches that are hanging too close to your house
Clear any debris from catch basins and gutters
Remember to close any windows – I always forget the one in the garage
Indoors:
Prepare an emergency kit. The Government of Canada recommends that each household prepare an emergency kit designed to provide basic necessities for up to 72 hours.
Here are the items to include;
Water - include two litres of water per person per day
Food - canned, boxed and dried foods that won’t spoil
Can opener
Flashlight - either wind up or battery powered along with extra batteries
Radio - either wind up or battery powered along with extra batteries
First aid kit
Medications
Extra house and car keys
Cash
Important family documents - ID, insurance and banking information
An emergency plan that includes - locations for your fire extinguisher, water, power and gas shut offs; neighourhood exits; potential meeting places; emergency contacts; health and insurance information; places to stay.
