The Truth About Travel Insurance

It’s Winter in Nova Scotia! That means many Nova Scotians are planning to travel outside of Canada and heading for warmer climates. Before you travel, we recommend purchasing travel insurance.

After more than 50 years in business, we know that each and every insurance situation is unique. Our knowledgeable and experienced staff across Nova Scotia shop Canada's top insurers to find the best coverage for you.

Our clients have raised many questions about travel insurance. We want to share them with you, so you have the truth about travel insurance.

  • Am I covered under my provincial health care plan?

The Canadian Government recommends travellers purchase travel insurance as provincial health insurance is unlikely to cover all international, or out of province, medical expenses. It is your responsibility to seek information from your provincial or territorial health authority and to obtain supplementary travel insurance and understand the terms of your policy.

  • I have coverage under my employee benefits plan.

Employee benefits plans can be limited in what they offer for travel benefits and may not offer trip cancellation or interruption insurance. The employee benefits plan may also only provide coverage for the employee and not their family members. Be sure to read the fine print!

  • I have coverage under my credit card.

Before you travel, contact your credit card company to clarify the type of travel insurance coverage provided. Many credit cards don’t provide full travel insurance coverage. In addition, your coverage is also limited to travel costs that were paid for with that card.

  • I have to find my own medical treatment while travelling outside the country?

There can be a lot of confusion, misunderstanding and lack of communication when you are looking for medical treatment. Just give us a call. We are here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have the expertise and knowledge to help you get the best possible medical care.

  • Travel Insurance doesn't cover pre-existing medical conditions.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, be sure to share it with your broker when you are purchasing travel insurance. Many pre-existing conditions can in fact be covered if deemed to be “stable”.

  • Travel insurance is expensive.

Life and weather are unpredictable. Travel insurance is a small investment for travellers that outweighs the potential costs of out of country medical expenses. Plans are flexible, with coverage available for single trips of any length or on an annual basis for multiple vacations. In addition to medical coverage, there are plans to cover lost baggage, trip interruption and trip cancellation.

  • It's difficult to purchase travel insurance.

We make it easy to purchase a travel insurance plan that is right for you. It’s as simple as a quick phone call to any of our licensed brokers in any of our four offices. Coverage can be arranged over the phone and the policy emailed straight to your inbox.
