Escaping Winter

With Adelle Long

With winter just around the corner, Adelle Long, personal insurance broker in our Elmsdale office, says she is asked many questions by clients who are planning to travel to a warmer climate.  “Many of our clients want to escape winter. Popular destinations are the southern United States, like Florida, Texas or Arizona.”

One of the benefits of working closely with an insurance broker is the advice they provide. Adelle provides counsel about home preparations. “There are many steps to take to ensure that your home is looked after in your absence,” explains Adelle. “You should check with us before you head out of town for an extended period.”

Her top advice to home owners:

  • Use self-timers for lights inside your home.
  • Have someone check on your house regularly, or engage a house sitter.
  • Have the sidewalks cleared and driveways plowed.
  • Have the mail and newspapers picked up or forwarded.
  • Contact your insurance broker.

Adelle also answers many questions about travel medical insurance this time of year. It is recommended that if you are travelling outside of Canada, that you purchase travel insurance. “It’s a small investment that outweighs the potential costs of out of country medical expenses,” she says. “We have plans available for as little as one week, and as long as six months or more,” Adelle said. “In addition to medical coverage, we also have plans for lost baggage, trip interruption and cancellation insurance, to make sure you are fully covered.”

While many people are heading out of town this winter, Adelle, a self-described textile junkie will be working on several winter knitting, crocheting and rug hooking projects. She and her husband, Jack, also have a very busy house, with 5 children between them ranging in age from 17-23 years old. “We really enjoy all the children,” says Adelle, “the two youngest will graduate from Grade 12 at the end of the school year.”

If you are planning to travel outside of Canada this Winter. Be sure to check with your insurance broker prior to leaving. It will help to ensure that you and your assets are covered while you are away. For more information, Adelle can be reached at 1-888-511-0777.
